Does Acupuncture Hurt? By Brian B. Carter, MS, LAc, Thu Dec 8th
I understand the fear of needles. What most people are familiarwith is the hypodermic needle of western medicine. They use itto draw blood or inject fluids, so they have to be hollow, andas a result are much bigger than our needles. Ours are solid, and much, much thinner. In fact, they are only about twice thethickness of hair. It's probably more accurate to describe themas filaments, but needles are the usual word. When I show them to new patients, and demonstrate how easily youcan bend them, they say, "how can you make this go straight?"That's just one of the skills of the acupuncturist we learn inschool. I actually was able to get through a leather shoe with a34 gauge needle without bending it. Most new patients are amazed how little they feel when theacupuncture needle is inserted. Sometimes they ask, "Did you putit in already?" If you feel anything, there may be a quick sharpsensation as it goes through the skin. Then there will benothing at all, or a dull spreading sensation. This is call "bigqi." That dull spreading sensation isn't painful, but it can beintense depending on the situation or the needling technique. Some patients are very sensitive, so we don't needle as deeplyon them.

These lead to large spikes in oestrogen levels that could promote the development of breast cancer, which is sensitive to the hormone. Warm needle acupuncture (WNA) therapy combines the effects of acupuncture and heat produced by moxibustion. This therapy has been widely used in Korean traditional medicine to treat a number of health problems. We evaluated the analgesic effect of WNA treatment on formalin-induced pain behavior and c-Fos expression in the spinal cord of rats. Acupuncture and heat stimulation by moxibustion were performed at the Pungsi (GB31) acupoint. Additional use of acupuncture to nsaid effectively reduces post-tonsillectomy pain Abstract Post-tonsillectomy swallowing pain is a common and distressing side effect after tonsillectomy and thus of great clinical

against swallowing pain after tonsillectomy. We therefore compared the potency of specific verum acupuncture points related
to a Chinese medical diagnosis in reducing postoperative swallowing pain with non-specific control points on the body as well
as a non-acupuncture group who received standard medication only. The standardized pain therapy after tonsillectomy was orally

Cardiac arrhythmias increase mortality and diminish quality of life. Several online databases were searched to produce relevant articles examining the effectiveness of acupuncture on cardiac arrhythmias. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years in Eastern medicine to treat multiple medical conditions and has been documented to improve many aspects of cardiovascular functioning. Despite several identified gaps in the efficacy of typical arrhythmia treatments (eg, pharmacotherapy, cardioversion), evidence supporting the use of acupuncture for cardiac arrhythmias has yet to be synthesized. According to the eight stu... Evidence based guidelines and current practice for physiotherapy management of knee osteoarthritis Conclusions: Although knee OA is usually managed in primary care, the similar number of referrals from primary and secondary care may suggest a deviation from evidence-based management guidelines. The guidelines' recommendations of exercise, patient education and self-management are observed by physiotherapists, but other modalities are often used despite poor or no research evidence supporting their efficacy. Whether any of these interventions are clinically beneficial is speculative as treatment outcomes were frequently under-evaluated. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The worst thathappens is you get a small bruise in the area. We never get anyresidual effect from hitting a nerve.
